Installing a Bidet at Home: Everything You Need to Know
8 July 2025
Bidet Toilets
More and more Australians are discovering the comfort, hygiene and eco-friendly benefits of bidets. But is it really as straightforward to install your own bidet as TikTok videos suggest?
The truth is, while some bidet models look like a simple DIY job, the reality can be a lot trickier than expected. There are important details you’ll want to know before you pick up the wrench and start tinkering.
And that’s where this guide comes in. Keep reading as we walk you through how to install a bidet, what can go wrong with DIY setups, and why calling in the professionals can save you time, stress and a whole lot of mess.
How to install a bidet: Your step-by-step guide
Thinking about installing a bidet yourself? It makes sense to want a clear picture of the process before diving in—or calling in the pros.
While it might seem simple on the surface, there are a few technical steps that, if done wrong, can lead to leaks, damage or poor performance. So as we walk you through the typical installation, just keep in mind that some parts are best left to someone with the right tools and experience.
We’ll talk more about the risks of DIY installation—and why hiring a professional can save you time, stress and repairs—later in the blog. But first, here’s what the general process looks like:
Turn off the water supply
Every bidet installation starts the same way: by shutting off the water to the toilet. This prevents leaks or pressure issues while you work on the plumbing.
Disconnect the toilet’s existing water line
Next up, you’ll need to disconnect the hose that runs from your toilet tank to the water supply valve. This is usually located on the wall or floor just behind the toilet.
Install the T-valve
The T-valve is a small connector that lets water flow to both your toilet and your bidet. At this stage, screw the T-valve onto the water supply valve where your toilet hose was connected before.
Then, reconnect your toilet hose to one side of the T-valve. Finally, attach the bidet’s hose to the other side. Make sure all connections are tight so water doesn’t leak.
Attach your bidet (seat or sprayer)
For sprayers, you’ll mount the sprayer handle near the toilet and connect the hose to the T-valve.
For bidet seats, you’ll remove your existing toilet seat and replace it with the new bidet seat, aligning it properly over the bowl before securing it.
Reconnect and test
Once everything is in place, you’ll reopen the water valve slowly to check for any leaks. Then, test the bidet controls to make sure everything is functioning as it should.
Sounds simple, right? It can be—but only when everything fits perfectly and the plumbing is compatible. And that’s often not the case in real homes.
What can go wrong with DIY bidet installation?
While installing a bidet might seem like a manageable weekend project, we’ve seen plenty of DIY jobs go sideways, regardless of whether it’s a sprayer, seat or attachment. Some of the most common issues include:
Water leaks from loose fittings: A small drip can quickly lead to water damage, mould growth, or even costly repairs if left unchecked.
Incorrect pressure settings: Too much water pressure can make the bidet uncomfortable to use or cause long-term wear on internal components.
Cross-contamination risks due to lack of backflow prevention: If your setup’s missing the right safety features, there’s a chance dirty water could flow back into your clean supply.
Damage to toilet plumbing or tiling: Misusing tools or over-tightening connections can crack porcelain, snap fittings or damage surrounding tiles.
Installation that voids product warranties: Many manufacturers require professional installation for their warranty to remain valid. A DIY job could leave you out of luck if something breaks.
Insurance concerns: One of the most important (and often overlooked) risks is home insurance coverage. DIY installs of bidets are not covered by home insurance if a leak occurs and causes water damage. This is why all plumbing work should be completed by a licensed plumber, who can provide proof of service. This documentation is critical for your insurance to cover any future water-related damage.
Why professional installation makes life easier
Sure, it’s definitely possible to DIY a bidet. But getting it right isn’t always as easy as the YouTube videos make it look. And, as we touched on above, one wrong move can turn into a leaky mess (or a massive warranty headache).
